This is a long shot I know , I wonder if anyone can tell me the name of the tree these seed pods came from ? I picked them off a tree in France this year ,the tree was approx the size and shape of a large cherry tree , there were hundreds of these pods ,I'm wondering if I could grow the seeds , I should have taken a photo of the tree but was more taken up with the sight of the pods hanging down ... Thanks .

It could be Honey Locust (Gleditsia triacanthos)

My immediate thought was Honey locust 'bean pod tree'. It has Acacia like foliage if that helps to describe the tree?

I've taken some seeds out of the pod Bamboo Googled and checked the seed against their photo ,I don't think the seeds are long enough for Delonix regia they look to be approx 18mm against the ruler mine are only 9mm . I'll put another photo on showing the seed with an orange pip for comparison ..
Thanks Steve & Botanic I'll have a look at that ...

Certainly looks like Honey Locust seeds Amy. Should be easy to germinate them now.

I'll have a go at germinating some Botanic although the H.L . seems very susceptible to diseases reading about it , it will an interesting experiment ....

We used to feed these to livestock when we ran a small croft and I used to chew one or two myself. Very tasty and chocolatey!!!!

Really Bulbaholic , dare I try one to see if its what we think it is if its chocolately I might ? I've just asked my OH if he would try one for me it was a definite NO from him !

If you are not totally sure, Amy, then no! Ours came out of a sack from an animal feed supplier but I have seen them since in the Mediteranean regions.

hi yes i think i saw pods similar to these a few years ago when we was in Portugal i think the guide said they was carob or some thing similar along those lines he also said they make diabetic chocolate from them.good luck with your search.

Ceratonia seliqua is the carob tree - they can grow in the uk in very sheltered spots - I had one for 5-6 years, but it succumbed to a very cold winter. I have another seedling - from France - so they do grow there too - in the south. The beans were used to weigh things against - hence the term carat (from carob)

Thanks for all your interest ,I decided against trying one ( it might be poisonous for all I know ) Thats interesting Hoya ,I like the idea of it being Carob, this morning I set 3 seeds I have my doubts as to whether whatever it is will grow permanently in our climate , I'll let you know if they grow ...

Delonix regia is one, but the foliage is quite distinctive, and it would only get that size in warmer regions.
