I have recently, purchased some Strawberry plants
which have given me strawberries in abundance. i
am now noticing, they are throwing out lots of tendrils,
i read recently, that you have supposed to cut them off
to strengthen the plant...can anyone tell me if this is true? Or do i just leave the plant alone to do its own thing...

Hi Fp....the tendrils will form new plantlets on the ends. If you don't want more plants, cut them off and as you say reserve the strength for the parent plant.

If you want more plants then, once the tendril has produced a set of leaves, pin it down in a small pot of compost (or straight into the ground if this is better for you) and they will take root. Once they have rooted cut it off from the main plant and it will grow on it's own. If you have sufficient plants and don't want any more then go ahead and cut the runners off as close to the crown as possible!

Thanks Janey, i think i will pot up some new plants, you can never have enough of plants...especially when they are Strawberries, thanks for your
quick response, i am very grateful...: ~ )))

Thank you too Ian, great answer, much appreciated...i am sorry to hear about
your best mate, even though it was 5 yrs ago, they still remain with you..
Duke, must have been a wonderful companion, sad that they have such a short life...: ~ (((

Sorry about taking over your question Freesiaperson. As you say they do still remain with you. Duke was 14 when he passed and I still miss him. :~((

As for your strawberries, I started off with nine plants and within two years had more than thirty! I only keep strawberry plants for three years maximum as after this time the fruit it produces starts to decline (in both quantity and quality)

You do not have to Apologize to me Ian...i know what it is like when a Member
comes on, that you know, especially someone like Janey, she is1 of the greats.. My god, its a terrible feeling, when you lose your greatest friend.
I hate to think about it, where Teddy is concerned.. i have had quite a few dogs
and its soul destroying, when they pass away. I could tell Duke is still in
your mind & Heart, having him on your Avatar, makes you feel so proud to
have, had such a wonderful Companion..: ~ )))

Ian i got so carried away, commenting about lovely Duke..i forgot to chat
about the Strawberries...i was thinking about, how many Strawberry plants
that you can have out of 1 Mother plant, its amazing!! I did read somewhere
in a Garden Magazine, that the Strawberry Plant is a 3-4 yr maxim. But,
when you think about it, if you keep repotting them, they never will die...
This Gardenind is such an Addiction, Ian..LOL

Your so right FP. We only keep plants for three years but almost all of the ones we have now came from the original plants. I do know a gardener (down the allotments) that has kept his plants re-potting on from the one plant he was given over thirty years ago! Now that is some record!

Yes your right there Ian....3 years...that tells me why my miniature strawberries haven't done so well this last couple of years......I like the flowers though as they are bright red.
Aw Fp what a kind thing to say...I think we're all great on here...one big happy family....wish we could get together sometime though...:o)
Duke was a real beauty Ian,.....like you say Fp, they are still with us....the love we have for Finn and his for us will stay forever...........

I did as Ian said last year, and actually just pushed the stalks/tendrils slightly into the ground at the bottom of the new sprouting leaf, and I didn't even cut them off.. I will do this year (I didn;t know!) ... as you can see from my pictures, I have loads now (picked 2kg today and made strawberry jam!).

I have mine in a large Container, not in the ground Heidi....i have had so many Strawberries, its amazing!! I have put 2 in pots at the moment...

Do you know FP and Janey, I have found some really (and I mean REALLY) great friends on this site. Almost everyone is so fantastically helpful and soooo knowledgeable. We do occasionally get the odd idiot that takes pleasure from upsetting others but they don't last very long. Ajay and Peter (two of the site owners and moderators) are very good at shutting down the "undesirables" that find their way here.

One thing you will find is that occasionally we tend to drift off subject and talk about other things (like I'm doing now! Lol)

Pot up your runners FP and you'll never look back (or buy another strawberry from a shop again!)
We had a bowl full today with some chocolate ice cream .............. I shall say no more! ! ! Lol

I quite agree Ian,this is a great site...if you have any garden problems, they
are solved in no time at all, you, will always find 1 Member coming to the rescue, like yourself, coming to my rescue..my `knight in shining armour`
LOL Everybody is so nice, but, we all seem to have our favourites!!!
I have been browsing around your Page...you & Shirley, i know of Shirley
from your Blogs. You seem to like to live off the land, just like the couple
in the `Good Life, i think lots of people now, are reverting back to the old
ways of living...a lot Healthier, & look at the fulfilment you must get back
in return. Anyway, `Lots of luck with your Chickens, & do keep us updated
with all your news on them...Janey, will agree with us, on what a great site
this is....

I do Fp.......it's great and smashing to have so many friends to talk about the one thing we all love...gardens! I don't know what I would do without my daily fix of GoY....and my Freesias are flowering......:o)))

5 Jul, 2010

Thanks FP, I can see another friendship blossoming here! Lol

I do like "the good life" and can tell you I have hated it this year because we have had to buy most of our veggies. I did have an allotment but due to illness and moving house I had to give it up. We also had to leave most of our flowery things behind when we moved but this garden is sooooo much bigger that next year I will be able to have the best of both worlds!

The chooks are a new idea and were for Holly really so she could learn responsibility for looking after them. Mind you it seems that I'm the one who feeds, cleans and generally cares for them but she does enjoy collecting the eggs! Lol

I have to agree, with everything, that you have commented on...we are
Garden Addicts, needing our fix every day..LOL
Great, to hear that your Freesia`s are flowering, feeling a bit envious, no sign
of mine yet?
Please, can we have a pic Janey? something to look forward to...: ~ ))

Thanks for adding me to you list Ian..LOL I am sorry to hear about your
set backs, but all things i believe, happen for a reason...it looks like they
have.. you now have a lovely big garden, so there is no stopping you now,
your head must be forever, filled with plans & ideas. `I do hope you are feeling
a lot better now Healthwise? What a lovely idea! Chooks for Holly, which
ends up being a fad, so they tire of them quickly..so who gets the responsilbility in the end? Yes, Ian & Shirley LOL
Still, you do have, a little egg collector ;~ ))
