I bought some bare rooted fruit trees in the autumn but was unable to plant them properly at the time so I heeled them into a trench in the garden. Unfortunately I still cannot plant them where I want them to be. Should I pot them up until I can plant them properly, probably in May?

Hi, yes I would pot them up before growth commences, no point letting them start in the wrong place, once they're potted up, you can plant them at your leisure without much disturbance to the roots, pot them in a loam based compost such as j I no 3, Derek.

And even in a not so good pot as you can just cut it away from the root ball when ready to plant if there have to stay in it longer than you would wish.

How do I say thanks?
