Has anyone got a good idea to stop the snails and slugs eating my Hosta plants? Apart from slug pellets( puppy eats everything in sight!)

I have asked a question this morning about what to put in slug pubs instead of beer, although the beer works brilliantly. After a bit of rain last night, ideal slug weather, each of my four slug pub traps had between twenty and forty slugs and small snails this morning. I planted a small bed of young lupins a week ago and every leaf is untouched. These traps do work.

The thought of emptying them each day makes my stomach crawl!

We use hostas as 'slug food' to keep them away from more special plants!!!!

Bulba that's cruel to Hostas. I shall have to notify the NSPCH.

I use copper rings as well. On damp evenings, a patrol of the garden and a pinch of salt on any slugs, helps to keep the numbers down.

You could try putting horticultral grit round them but would your puppy try and eat that! or I saw on Gardeners World once that you can make a garlic spray but not sure of recipe

I collect eggshells through the winter for this purpose. When washed and crushed they are sprinkled around the Hostas. I can usually make it till about August before any holes start to appear.
Works for me.

A few weeks ago somebody said that planting garlic in amongst them worked.

I've made copper collars out of tape and rigid plastic round mine. Time will tell but they are untouched at the moment. You can get animal friendly pellets but I personally think they're useless. Try hiding pellets under a small flower pot near the hostas - you don't need piles of them, about 6 should do it.
