In my garden I have some areas covered by pea gravel below that on top of the bare earth I have plastic sheeting, this works well and stops weeds rooting in the earth. BUT, I cannot stop weeds germinating in the gravel due to the dust and dirt that accumulates in it, they are easy to pull up but there is so many it's back breaking
Has anybody got an idea of the best course of action for me

Products like Pathclear are supposed to stop weeds germinating for a season. But nothing is going to totally solve your problem. I've been searching for the answer for years! Regular topping up of the gravel helps a bit, as does raking it over whenever you can (this can be difficult when there's a membrane down).

Hi, welcome to GoY, if you use a dutch hoe, push it into the gravel until the blade is buried, and flat against the membrane, then drag it slowly backwards, keeping the blade flat to the membrane, this should cut off any weeds from their roots, and they will just rot away, Derek.

It's just one of those things that gardeners have to put up with. You won't stop nature!

Thanks for that Derek.
' Roundup' helps but is expensive.

Sorry p.s. You need 4 dry days to use 'Roundup'
successfully as the rain washes it off.

Never had any trouble with Roundup and we rarely get 4 consecutive dry days here. If anything we get very heavy dew almost every night. 4 hours drying time maybe.
Pathclear does not seem to work for us, I am getting weeds appearing in our gravel paths now and they have been watered twice already this year, with the stuff.

I learned my lesson about membrane, gravel rock etc. Looks great for a year or two and then if you don't use constant chemical and mechanical warfare on it, it will dissapear under a nice layer of weeds and grass. " you won't stop nature" as one of the members have said.
