Why do the wild roses never have problems - no aphids, mold or anything. I'm wrestling these all the time - they bite! It's only the cultivars that need to be coddled.

yes moon grower is right . they lose there genetic strength by being inbred . its the same as a lot of food stuffs we selectively grow . pedigree dogs arnt as healthy as mongrols because of selective inbreeding . mother nature takes thousands if not millions of years to adapt things to change . human beings have cut that down to hundreds and for there own gain . proof that there is know short cuts without a downside .

And selective breeding is one of the reasons why flowers that traditionally had a strong scent - like Nicotiana and Freesias often now have no scent at all.

I will say that these have a very sweet scent, but they are ramblers.

I think wild roses are beautiful - such a pretty shape.

Me too...agree with Melchi. But they need space. noseypotter is so right. Even sweetpeas are losing their scent now. Sometimes I toy with the idea of a species only garden! You know...like the Garden of Eden! ;) wouldn't that be wonderful?

I bet that would be a lot easier to manage then the cultivated garden. These have intruded on my boxwood hedge. I'm starting to like them...

Yes..working with rather than fighting nature!

Nature certainly makes a better friend than foe! What about that wonderful garden featured on GW tonight? I really admire the philsophy behind that, while recognising that most of us don't have the sort of environment that makes working quite so closely with nature possible.

Wasnt that beautiful?! And those gardeners were so chilled! They have it sussed! I can just see my garden now...stinging nettles and cleavers with dandelions for floral interest...wonderful ;)

I can't even name half the things in my garden, but it sure looks nice.

« Hi everyone, I'm growing swift potatoes in a grow bag, and I have noticed...
One of the reasons is that humans have adapted and manipulated the cultivars to produce showy blooms and much longer flowering periods. The wild rose is simply much hardier.
