I have been attempting to grow vegetable for the first time this year, not much success my beetroot has bolted, the broccoli went to seed and now the courgettes that I thought were doing so well have gone soft on the ends and on inspection look hollow. They are still quite small and it has happened more to yellow ones than the green. Does anyone know the cause, thanks.

You haven't missed much with the courgettes, they're awful things. And I've been trying to grow carrots for years without success. They were 3 inches long this year and as thin as pencils !
My beetroot is ok, I think I grew " Boltardy" this year but not certain, but it seems to takes ages to grow - and never bolts. Try lettuce, I find that very easy, and the "little Gem" variety seem to come up in no time.

Beetroots and Broccoli are cold crops. They like cold/cool weather, not freezing though. Same for lettuce, carrots, spinach & cabbage. I plant mine out in early March to be harvested in May before the hot 'dog days of summer' arrive which will cause them to bolt.
All is not lost. You can still do a fall crop. Go and replant in late August. Good luck.
I don't know anything about "courgettes." I never heard of them so maybe somebody else can help you there.
