can anyone identify this weed? I had loads of it when my gdn was neglected for a while and dug it all out!!?? it is still popping its head up everywhere and am pulling it up as soon as seen. The small fls are yellow and the seed heads (i've discovered) are made up of tiny hooked seeds that attach themselves to clothing rather like a burr but much smaller. I've looked in all my books and the internet but can't find it. the pics don't show up the fine hooks on the seed head. and there are two types of leaf on the same plant

It's Geum urbanum - the flowers look like one of the Potentillas, as do the leaves to some extent, so that was my first thought - but the burr-like seed-heads and upright habit ID it as the closely related Geum:

Definitely not ragwort with those leaves. Could by Ilex, pix is so bad it is hard to decide.

Better pic, perhaps, is at:

Not ragwort - I think it's avens, that has hooky seeds, strawberry like leaves and comes up determinedly.

Ilex is correct. There is a lot of it in the garden of a customer of mine I have done work for. I have just left plants of it in the wilder part.

Clever Ilex and beattie... it is Geum urbatum / herb bennet/ wood avens/ all the same plant. so easy to identify when you know the name!! it is in my book ' the Concise British Flora in Colour' yet I couldn't find it. Thanks again
