my goldcrest are quite small, in pots, but one is growing by a window and I just want to take a little bit off the top - is it alright to do that, just take a small bit off the top

Yes - but it won't stop it growing taller!

You can't take the top off a bird, it's cruel!

Ha ha, made me laugh, never thought about that Landgirl - Dailseaman, I'm assuming you're talking about Cupressus Wilma Goldcrest, the coniferous plant...

Eventual height of this one is over 12 metres so perhaps not the right shrub for the position? And perhaps not so good long term in a pot?

I like them, and I hate to say it but the little ones are so cheap to buy (£2.45 in some places) so it could be classed as a throw away plant. Get rid of it and plant a new one.

Often bought as a temporary display during winter months, combined with things like pansies and ivy - if that's what Dailseaman has done, then they'll be gone by late spring, presumably.
