I'm not going to tell you about tomatoes, Winifrede, I don't have the answer for you, but just wanted to offer condolences for your loss. And to say that chilli chenzo is a variety of chilli pepper...

Condolences from me too.
I'm in East Yorkshire and I don't start mine off until the begging of April. I also start them in a heated propagator. So no you are not too late. and even if you are you can buy many plants from garden centres etc.

With tomatoes, it is better to sow late than too early and then have plants that ought to be outside when the weather is still cold. Here in Berkshire, I find late March is plenty early enough to start them off. After sowing, I put the pots in the airing cupboard, and as soon as the first shoot breaks the soil, all the pots come out and go on an indoor windowsill.

Chilli Chenzo is a black chilli Winifrede, grown from seed, originally for putting into flower arrangements. I had a few leftover so sold them at my local flower club's plant sale, now a few of the ladies ask for them each year.

Sorry for your loss Winifrede. Only yesterday I planted three different varieties of tomato seeds and some Chilli Chenzo. Mine are in small pots on a windowsill. Once they're up and growing they will be thinned and put in the greenhouse but by then we should have warmed up enough.
