I found my nearest gardening shop now has it's new stocks of seeds in so went up to buy beetroot whcih I grow every year and pickle.
But they had no less 11 different varieties ! Is it worth asking for a recommendation ? I don't want small ones and my soil is rather heavy (if this makes any difference.)

I don't know if you can get these in the UK, but I always grow "Detroit Supremes" or "Detroit Dark Reds." I've never been disappointed and always get Large, sweet delicious beets & the tops are fantastic as a side dish or in soups, etc. You just can't beat these beets.

Early Wonder seems to do better in clay soil, here.

I should have a look at someone like Suttons Seeds online and see what are the different attributes of the many varieties. I would steer clear of F1s as they are the most expensive and there is no need to have all the beetroots mature at the same time. I would also ask the many gardening people on this site for the favorite varieties. Mine would be 'Boltardy' or 'Detroit'.
