Scarifying - just bought the dreaded machine. Do we use it straight away or wait until we've treated for moss? Or both?

My dog used to scarify our lawn every time she 'went'!

I bought a 'dreaded machine' a couple of years ago, and I have to admit that it was one of the best investments I have ever made. When I think of the time I used to spend trying to kill myself with a spring rake. i can't see any reason why you shouldn't give it a go as soon as the lawn dries out and you won't compact it by walking on it. You will be surprised just how much moss and dead grass it removes so you can give it a treatment of weed and feed with moss killer a little later,

That's what I wanted to hear Jimmy. Only used moss killer once and the lawn looked so dreadful I've never dared to do it again.
Kenny you're probably right but the thought of the probable result scares me...

We,or should I say OH..scarified ours twice over the last couple of weeks ,with a manual type rake and got lots of moss and dead thatch out..He added a weed and feed a couple of days ago,and the remaining moss is going black already..just had to give it a good watering,as rain isn't imminent..looks like there is more moss than we thought !
I've just read your last comment,Sue..don't worry,it will always look dreadful for a while, but it comes right eventually, and really is worth the effort ..

Thankyou for the encouragement Sandra. The machine is still in its box - must get OH to get it out and put it together...

Hi Sue, I agree with jimmytheone, but I would give it a trim first if it' a little long, so that the tines can get right down to the moss and thatch, it will look a bit of a mess for a while, but will soon be back to a lovely moss free, green lawn, Derek.
