I have two tall hawthorn trees in my garden, for the last 16 years they have blossomed, last year and this year, so far, there has been no flowers, are they ok. Thanks John

Hi John and welcome to GoY. You don't say where you are in the UK but it is a little early to expect them to flower if you are in the northern part of Britain. Did they leaf up last year?

Hello, I'm in Stoke on trent. The trees are quite old and about 20feet tall, I have lived with them for the last 16years and every year we had flowers, last year however, nothing. They are beginning to leaf up now but no sign of flowers yet, is it normal for them to have a year off?

Don't know why you didn't get flowers last year, maybe there was a period of heavy late frost and the buds dropped off, but this tree usually blooms in May- in fact its common name is May tree, because of that.

Thanks for the help, I'll let you know if they flower. John

Hawthorn doesn't generally flower till late April - May (it's often referred to as 'May', in fact).

Did you by any chance do any drastic pruning the year before last?

When I lived in Stoke hawthorne rarely flowered until aftefr the first week of May. If yours normally flowered earlier you must be in a nice sheltered spot! I hope they do better this year. If you don't perhaps feeding with a high potash fertilizer in late winter would help.

Hello everyone, the larger of the two trees is in glorious flower now, the smaller one is about to flower. It seems a lot to do with the changing climate we are experiencing, in the last two years I think the trees have shed the flower buds to preserve energy, thanks again. (hope you like the pic) John.
