I have 2 rhododendron bushes in my garden, they both have large buds on but should they have flowered by now, I was in a local park (north east England)recently and a lot of them were in full flower?

Mine have had big buds for several months but no sign of opening yet. Rhododendrons cover a pretty long season between them.

Some of ours are long finished, some are in flower now whilst others are yet to flower.

I agree with above. Your rhododendron is probably just fine, so long as the buds are green and healthy. Not all rhodies flower at the same time. I have 3 rhododendrons on my property; 1 is in full bloom, the other 2 just have swollen buds. They will flower a little later as they always do.

It depends on the variety, but my neighbour's have only just begun to flower, a lot later than in previous years.
