I am a flower crazy person and I'm always trying out growing new and excentric flowers, yet believe it or not, I've never successfully grown a sunflower. I'm scared I will go wrong somehow,is there anything I should know before attempting to grow sunflowers? Are there particular conditions that the plant must be under?

No big deal. Take a dowel 1/4 inch wide or a little wider and drive it down into the soil with a rubber mallet about 3 inches and no more, pull the dowel out and drop in a sunflower seed stamp the hole closed with the heel of your shoe or Wellington. Plant the seeds about 1 ft or a little less apart. Once done water well then walk away and leave this area alone nothing more has to be done. A suggestion would be to plant a row of seeds each week. This way you will have a succession of blooms which will keep the area in flower longer. When the plant does flower, you will see the bees go to work pollinating the flower head which will be upright. Then in a few weeks the flower head will droop or drop down thus indicating that the sunflower seeds are ripe for eating. The birds know this and it will be at this time that you will see the finches start taking the seed.

I had some sunflower heads from last year and hung them up for the birds to eat the seeds, they have seeded themselves this year so they are very easy to grow.

Lots of people start them off in pots and plant them out when they've got going.

Stera is right. They can be grown in large pots from start to finish if you wish to do so. Just plant the shorter varieties.
