Cucumbers - I've never known quite what to do

When the bottom "branches" start to spread out along the floor. I've always cut them off and concentrate on the plant attaining some height.
But is this right ? Or perhaps wasteful ?

In previous years I have trained them along wires like a cordon. but in other years my hubby has cut them off.
doesn't seem to make much of a difference

Thanks for that, S, i was thinking of putting up 2 canes from ground level, at about 45 degrees and training the bottom "branches" up them.
I look forward to other's views.
