Need to know which way the planter faces, i.e. north, outh east or west; how deep it is and what the soil conditions are like.

Okay so a narrow border that does not receive a lot of sun... have you considered heathers?

Heucheras are another option - lots of varieties with different coloured leaves.

Does it get 4 hrs sun all year or just in the summer?
You would have spring colour there with bulbs, especially daffodils. As it is so narrow and edged with porous bricks it will probably get very dry so that will be a consideration when choosing plants. I would mix some gel crystals into the soil to help to retain some moisture. When you say its based on clay, is that solid clay or would roots be able to penetrate it? Many of the perennial geraniums would probably be ok there. If you look at the website of Long Acre Plants you'll see lots of examples of those and others plants for dry shade.

Summer will be easier as you can use bright begonias as they don't mind semi shade at all, but they will need to be planted afresh every year. You could use fuchsias in summer too but only in summer as there isn't room for the hardy ones.

When you have made a selection I suggest you come back with a list and we can advise you whether they would be suitable for the space you have.

I have Heucheras in my garden, Lime and Marmalade, and they are really bright and eye catching. There are many varieties to choose from, Jim.
