How do I Overwinter Pelargoniums?

In your area, I would keep it in a sunny window indoors, since this is how favored Pelargoniums are kept over in Flagstaff, AZ. You could also keep cuttings in water over the winter, as long as you keep changing the water, and occasionally add a little dilute fertilizer.

Another year you'll find August is a good time to get cuttings rooted. I would dig the plant up and pot it and keep it under glass somewhere. It doesn't need to be warm - it is damp that kills them as long as they don't get frosted.The colder the room the drier it needs to be. It may be rather leggy by the spring but cuttings should root successfully once it starts to grow some likely shoots. I don't think they would root over winter in water in our location - difficult to know about different countries effect on them.

If you keep it in a sunny window, Paul, do not be tempted to water it too often. I've learnt that Pelargoniums survive better if kept fairly dry (no water more than once a week), and sheltered from frost. Hope you get lucky!

Thank you all for your advice. Sounds like my back bedroom window is just the place for it to overwinter. I'll be taking a few cuttings as well.

back bedroom window sounds perfect Paul. Mine are in the rarely heated [a couple of hours in the evening to take the chill off] conservatory. Survival is good but I do keep them very dry. they originate more from Mediterranean type locations.

Yes, thanks everybody. I've done everything you said now it still wants to bloom and sending up flower buds. Should I cut off the buds or just let it go?

enjoy the flowers Paul they were initiated several weeks ago. Mine throw out the odd flower all winter and bring some cheerful colour.

And what did I do after all that good advice? Left them outside too long and the frost got them, lol.

They can be tricky Sue . . . one of mine (in a cold greenhouse) is looking very gloomy, but so far the cuttings look healthy. Win some, lose some :)

It can be so mild here the frost took me unawares - last winter they stayed outside all winter under a south wall. Surprising they survived actually, as although it was mild it was wet and they hate that. Anyway it was time I had some more really - had those for years...

We just had our first arctic blast that nothing can survive. Everything got "flash frozen" but my pelargoniums were spared.
