Hi
I found this in my garden this morning...what is it????
My first thought was a Chinese Lantern.
Inside it looks like a seed albeit rather large.
Any enlightments ?

Yep, Chinese lantern seed pod. I love the lacy look of those.

It is indeed. the lace detail is due to the woody vessels [xylem]that carry the water around the plant. They take longer to rot away than the rest of the structure.

That was a good guess on my part.Thank you all .If I plant the seed, would it grow ok?Mind you I feel reluctant to break it open, such a pretty thing.I first saw this plant growing in a conservatory,is it an indoor plant?

the seed may well grow and there is an outdoor perennial. Physalis francetti . I had some but it was a bit invasive so I got rid of it. I did like it very much.

Same family as Physalis peruviana that you see sometimes in supermarkets sometimes. It might be that one you saw in a conservatory - grows huge in there and can take over! (berries are yellow rather than red like the ones we see in our gardens.

I got rid of mine for the same reason, Seaburn. They are very pretty though.
