Can anyone tell me what kind of plant this is and if I can safely prune the top off with it continuing to grow? It was given to me by someone about 2 years ago and has grown a foot and a half since then!

Hi Bamboo, my thought was Ficus lyrata too, but the leaves don't look quite right, they're usually more upright, but it could be that they're hanging down because it needs repotting, that's why I didn't comment, Derek.

Derekm - there is a hint that the leaves might composite, or clustered off one stem (right at the top in front) which fits with Schefflera actinophylla, but its so etiolated its hard to be sure ...

Hard to say what it is - it might be a lanky, light deprived Schefflera actinophylla, or maybe (less likely) a Ficus lyrata, but its in a bit of a state so hard to be sure. I'd certainly cut it down, I wouldn't be able to stand looking at the poor thing, but I don't know how it will respond. If its a Ficus variety, it may bleed white sap quite profusely for a while.
