Can anyone identify this lovely thing which is causing havoc in our greenhouse? We think the yellow and black beastie is a spider mite, but the markings seem different to the two spotted variety. And any miracle cures for it??!

That's an aphid of some kind. The ones with black spots are the adults, while the plain colored ones are the kids. No miracles available, but if it's on edibles, spray thoroughly and frequently with a solution of organic washing up fluid, or with insecticidal soap from the garden center. If they're on ornamentals, Provado is more effective, but also more toxic.

Thank you - we have tried washing up liquid and have tried drowning them by spraying hard with water. But as they are on vegetables, and have got way out of hand, I think we will just have to cut our losses and be more vigilant next season! And possibly get some biological predators too!!

Too much to squash with your fingers, Janie?

As some might lurk in corners of the greenhouse overwinter, it might be a good idea to give the greenhouse a really good clean out and wash down with a detergent once it is empty. Burn a fumigating candle in it to kill as many bugs as possible.

We started squashing with the fingers - but then they just exploded and there are millions - no, zillions!! We used to use fumigating cones in our previous greenhouse but I believe they are now only available to professionals. Jeyes fluid still seems available but I don't know if that would deal with the overwintering ones/eggs. I think it was really our fault as we kept the atmosphere far too dry. Again, we will need to get a watering system going for next year to keep it more humid. This has been the greenhouse's first season - it is 4metres by 10 metres!
But the tatties and the garlic did well.

Wow, that's large.

Well where we are, things like French and runner beans would be difficult to grow outside. But we have a lot to learn in managing one this size. There are quite a few Keder houses in the surrounding area - they apparently withstand 140mph winds!

I can make a good guess at the locality in which you live, Janie, and can see your difficulties.

We are quite close to the gulf stream - so usually not many severe frosts. But there was one night in May that just turned all the rhodie and azalea flowers to mush overnight. Rather unusual.
