We Have A Mole (or 2 or 3) 😡

We’ve not had to endure moles for several years but they’ve reappeared over the last couple of months.

Theyre mainly in the lawn areas of ‘the new land’, they started in one area then moved quite away and popped hills up again, I must have cleared 20!
We don’t want to kill them – we do have some old traps of my dad’s but they’re inhumane so we bought some sonic mole scarers which are supposed to annoy them with sound/vibration so that they move on.
I had to smile this morning and frown at the same time – they don’t seem to be working! There was a mole hill yesterday which I cleared away to just leave the hole, then stuck this in but it’s not perturbed them at all!

Any advice gratefully received :)

Oh dear, but thank you for the smile. I bought some of these a few years ago but never got around to using them. Our last cat caught the moles but the cat died and the moles are back...They are said to hate vibrations though - so I am trying jumping on where I'm assuming the tunnel is - good exercise even if it doesn't affect the little man in the grey velvet overcoat...

Sorry for clicking Like - it was for the smile, not the molehill!

Haha Stera, I know you have to laugh, we have 4 of these devices, they work on solar and battery, or not! I've stamped on the tunnels too, oh dear let's hope they go soon, my old cat Jess was a good catcher of moles too.

A new cat maybe?

hmmm... I had a plague of them this summer... Will be interesting to see how many bulbs are left next spring. I bought an emitter for the basement and it doesn't seem to phase the mice at all... don't think it works on mice...it works on people ..we think it's working and forget to keep track. the mice/moles win! I think Siris has hit on something. ;-) Seriously:... I wish I could offer a strategy but alas... the moles are winning over here too.

I don't have moles but I heard they despise peppermint. So if you soak some cotton balls with peppermint oil, then throw them down the hole, would that deter them? Or peppermint chewing gum?

Haha Siris, I have another cat but she’s not shown any interest.
Oh dear Lori what a nuisance.
That’s interesting Bathgate, it’s worth a try, thank you

Hmm...I read up a bit on them a few months ago. One of the things I learned is that they wont come up in a lawn that is used as a play area because they sense the vibrations of people and pets in the area. This explains why I had so much activity in my borders all summer, but never in the lawn. The dogs and us walking there. So perhaps you need to get Bonny out there more!

Lol Karen, now that makes sense as that part of the garden is quiet and I’m not even active much these months over there. Bonnie prefers her bed by the fire lol. So you had them too Karen? I’m going to try Bathgates suggestion of peppermint oil next.

I tried pushing dog poo down the holes. It didn’t work, they just moved and built new mounds!

Oh dear, I had as it turns out only one in my front garden last year. More and more of the lawn had ditches in it as each day went pass. Have to admit, I ended up using the service of one of our customers. He is a mole catcher. Tim sprained his ankle mowing the lawn as he tripped on one of the ditches. Hope peppermint works.

We had a mole in our old garden Dawn I was told by an elderly chap you should hit the ground hard several times with a spade and at the same time shout at the mole to leave your garden , it was obviously coincidence but it did leave we didn't see any more mole hills :o)

Thats really funny Amy! But it does concur with what I read which is that they move away from vibrations from above ground! :)

Years ago when we had quite a few moles I read that one should address the mole mounds and ask their occupiers politely to leave. My OH made fun of me as I set about this. Sheer co-incidence, but we had no problems after that. Our neighbour, however, tried everything to get rid of mole newcomers. It didn't help when I pointed out that his wife was Secretary of the RSPCA! He had to hire a mole catcher in the end!! And, Amy and Karen, I didn't have to jump up and down, except to celebrate their departure!!

:) ha ha! Great story!

I hope you can get rid of them Dawn. I have no experience of them personally but can see they are a nuisance.
I understand how you don't want to kill them. I'd be the same. I don't even kill snails and slugs lol

Oh dear Jen, yes there's always the risk of ankle injuries.
Shame the dog poo trick didnt work Karen.
Haha Amy, I will have to wait until no-one is around and have a good at that, the neighbours must think Im a bit crazy as I go around in my wellies and dressing gown, hat and gloves with my spade and bucket clearing the hills.
Eir, I havent tried talking to them, except to swear at them under my breath lol.
I hope they move on Hywel, fingers crossed.

I was told by an older resident that the old way was to put creosote into the runs as they have very sensitive noses and they would vacate. As you can no longer get the original creosote I don't know if the substitutes work. Presumably it is the coal tar smell they don't like.

Honeysuckle, I could put a bar of cold tar soap down a hole lol.!
I used some clove oil on cotton wool pads yesterday, we did 6 holes, but today there was a massive new hill, the soil from it filled a bucket! I feel were just chasing them around or they are chasing us around.

16 Dec, 2018

Yeah..chasing them around for sure. I’d just leave them Dawn....you’ll exhaust yourself! Lol!

17 Dec, 2018

Lol Karen
So did yours just go or did you exterminate them?! Ours are on borrowed time.

17 Dec, 2018

No, I presume they are still here...but haven't come into the grass yet.

18 Dec, 2018

We had one once that just tunelled along the edge between the grass and the border and was no trouble at all. Pity they don't all do that... Might try talking to the on in the lawn - it just worries me that they might set up a nursery there...

18 Dec, 2018

I see Karen, all those fields and they come into your garden!
Stera, you had well behaved moles, I have that scenario too going on but in the lawn too, 3 hills again yesterday, they’ve got until the new year to go then the gloves are off.

19 Dec, 2018

Ooo-er, are you gong to strangle them...

19 Dec, 2018

Haha Stera :-)
They’ve moved to the area where they first appeared now ??!
