I have a house which faces East/West with a path which runs along the southern wall. The Path is about 1.5m wide and the other side of the path is a wall which is c.1 metre tall along the boundary between my house and our neighbours'. I have built a pergola over the path at the front of the house and have bought a honeysuckle (heaven scent) to try to grow over it.

I bought it because a honeysuckle likes its roots in shade, which teh 1m high wall will provide, but the top bits in sun, which is where the top of the pergola is.

My only issue is that neighbours also have a bush about 1.5m high on the other side of the wall which will mean that until the honeysuckle is tall enough to grow to the top of the pergola it will all be in a bit of shade.

Should I either put the pot in which the plant will be planted against the 1m wall and hope that it manages OR should I put the pot against the front (West facing wall) of the house so the honeysuckle can grow up a trellis at the edge of the house and then out over the pergola and drape down the far side.

Even if teh second option is best, would it survive if I put the pot against the 1m wall?

Climbers such as honeysuckle and clematis have evolved to grow from the shade into the sun. In the wild, they will be in shade until tall enough to reach the sun, so will be happy with the same situation in your garden.
