I have an old one stem very woody rose. I thought it was a climbing rose originally! It's not! It's a rose bush. It has one stem about 2" thick and stands about 6' in height. Can I cut this back to about a foot off the ground to make it give new shoots from the bottom of the plant? Help!

I definitely would go for it...about a foot above the graft as you suggested yoursef. Its hard to kill a rose by pruning it!

I would also clear out around it so the base can get more light, and give it a bit of Epsom salts. A little extra magnesium often stimulates basal growth.

I also find that maxicrop is excellent for stimulating growth. Seaweed extract.

It does look rather lofty. I've cut down a couple of roses in the past which looked like this and they have come back. Just be aware of the graft point near the base of the rose and don't cut it below this.
