I've got a very small patch in shade and I grow a couple of huge hostas, two clematis, Solomon's seal, Iris, Pulmonaria, a rose, Lily of the valley, a Daphne and more and they are doing really well.

There are also several perennial geraniums and very surprisingly crocosmia is doing well in shade here. If you have room Mahonia - you could try the new Sweet Caress if its sheltered from the wind.
