Sambucus niger, possibly the variety Black Lace. Its an elder.
The berries are edible but not worth it - birds love them.

Black Beauty; Black Lace has finer leaves. I have two in my garden but they're beasts although they do give me privacy.

Thanks to both

Beasts? I think they're lovely...

You can cut them back to two feet stumps in spring (just above a growth bud) and they will still get to seven or eight feet by June.

But if you cut them back in spring you won't get any flowers. I cut mine back after flowering and it does not dismay them at all.

I have the Black Lace variety which hasn't been pruned much for ages and is now a lovely big tree. I was told yesterday by a gardener friend to cut it back to about two foot tall in the Spring then you get the new growth of the black stems, otherwise like mine the stems are like the common Elder - brown! I must admit as it is an Elder which are usually tough as old boots, it gets hacked when I feel like it, it's now in full flower, pink and frothy and gorgeous. I might just keep it as a tree as it looks spectacular.

Stera - sorry to disagree with you. I cut mine back and it is flowering now. Perhaps not as many flowers, but it does carry some every year.

Don't apologise - that's good to know. How early did you cut it back please?

In early March, just as the growth buds were beginning to open.

Sorry to be a misery but I cut mine back by about a quarter in the late autumn and they have flowered well this year.

How do I say thanks?
