Hello everyone. I bought a plant at a garden show and it was with the poppys. I know there are loads of varieties but this doesnt look like a poppy at all. Could anyone please help me identify ? Thanks in advance :)

Definitely not a poppy. Much more like a Gazania.

It's Gaillardia 'Dazzler' (which I suspect is what Owdboggy meant, the names are similar). It does not like heavy soil, tends to die out in winter in such soil, but cut it to the ground in September and if it keeps going, dig up and divide every three years.

Thank you - fell like a right lemon asking you all if it was a poppy, it was on the 'poppy shelf' :) I think its stunning. Will do my best to look after it

You're not the only 'lemon' on the planet - years ago, when I first started gardening, I took a list of plants written down in Latin to ask the local nursery guy who knew stuff how to say them, as well as whether they'd got them.. and took two pieces of different plants for him to ID. I also remember around 30 years ago wittering on at length about a Cistus in someone's garden that had yellow flowers and was flowering in late summer - course, it wasn't a Cistus at all, it was a Potentilla. I still cringe when I think about it! But its how we learn...

I did mean Gaillardia, always get those names mixed up. Sign of ageing brain. Sorry.

You could have told me it was an 'Ooodiddleydoowop' and I'd have believed you :)

It's definitely Gallardia - possibly 'Arizona Sun' and one of my favorite plants. It's also called 'Blanket Flower.' The easiest plant in the world to grow and covered in flowers until frost. It likes lean soil that drains well. It doesn't like fertilizer and not too much water. It's referred to as a 'short lived perennial,' but my plant is going on 5 years and it takes New York winters like a champ. It will self seed. Dead head spent bloom for more flowers. I never felt it needed dividing. Seeds are popular with the local birds, but you can collect seeds in the fall to start new plants. I just posted a pic. Good choice

I could be on here all day if I posted a picture of everything I had in the garden that I can't name. I've ended up calling them things so I know which plant I'm working with. I even have a plant called 'Bob' in the garden because I have no idea what it is :)

How about a picture of Bob? If he gets an id you can still call him bob though :-))

I think my garden needs a little Ooodiddleydoowop! It's on my 'to do' list.
