Has anyone grown the hardy Gardenia outside in the uk? I have one in a pot, in acid compost and it is flowering well and looking good. I am looking for a spot in dappled shade - and will add ericacious compo to the planting hole. Does anyone have any advice?

If you found a "sweet spot" for a gardenia to grow, I wouldn't touch it. I call them the Prima Donnas of the flower garden - everything must be just so. They hate being moved around. At least wait for the flower cycle to end.

Do you mean Gardenia 'Kleim's Hardy'? I had one for about three years in a pot. It flowered in its second year, very pretty, but the rate of growth was poor and the plant looked 'weedy' and it looked so ghastly by the third year I binned it. If you've got acid soil it might do okay - I don't know anyone who's got one now, five years later after we all bought them, so I've no experience of it being in the ground.

I may tuck it away till next spring and then plant it!

I should have said mine was outside, on a sheltered, southfacing balcony all the time I had it, I never brought it indoors, they're not intended to be houseplants, though in a tough winter, some protection or shelter judiciously placed (if its in a pot) would be sensible.

Thompson-Morgan are advertising one in the papers today called Crown Jewels which is hardy, for on the patio or sheltered borders which is said to be "frost hardy but in need of protection in severe winters". My mother in law bought me one as a house plant which I managed to kill off! I think it was telling me something or I was telling it something:)

The only place I've seen gardenias thrive is Florida. They line the streets and everybody has a gardenia hedge and how they perfume the air.

My brother had one planted in his garden but it lasted 2 summers and 1 winter. the second winter it died in the garden.

The flower shops grow them here in New York as Mother's Day gifts. They are intended to be 'throw away' plants.

My local garden centre has a 5 year hardy plant guarantee but they don't include Gardenia 'Kleim's Hardy. I bought one but it didn't look too wonderful after the first year; in my opinion its not as good as it's cracked up to be. If it's looking good in a pot then I would leave it there.
