Help! Neighbour's greengage tree suckers growing in our garden

United Kingdom

Hi, our neighbour whose garden we back on to has a very tall greengage tree right at the edge of their garden. The tree really overhangs on our side, and there are shoots of the tree coming up on our side as well.

Is there something we can do to stop the roots of the tree coming onto our side and shoots growing up in our garden?

Do greengage tree roots spread far? We're concerned about the roots coming close to our house and causing subsidence - the tree is probably closer to our house than it is to the person whose garden it is in (our garden is not very long), so while it may not be a concern for them, it is for us. Our house is probably 5m from the tree :-( should we be worried?

Thanks a lot!

You should visit your neighbor and kindly voice your concerns. They are most likely unaware of your situation and would accommodate you. The two of you should be able to work out an amicable solution. You are legally allowed to trim anything encroaching on your territory but you want to preserve good neighborly relations since you both have to live with each other.

If the tree is very tall, its likely pretty old.The fact its producing a lot of suckers might mean its coming to the end of its life, but either way, just remove the suckers, preferably by wrenching them off if you can. Is your property a new build, built when the tree was already in place? What is your estimate of the distance between the trunk and the sucker that's farthest away from it within your garden?
