yes it will as it will reduce the amount of water loss from the leaves. try and lift as much soil with it as you can, but I know you'll know that :o) don't hurt your back.

Many thanks Eileen. I had a 'gut feeling' that it was the right thing to do but wasn't sure why. Luckily my garden helper will do the digging! I've managed a couple of Hellebores and a grass, but know it's best for me not to tackle the bigger plants . . .
