Growing a sweet lime(musambi) tree from cuttings

India

I managed to get 5 cuttings from a tree and followed instructions from a youtube video but I could not procure the rooting agent necessary but planted the cuttings anyhow. It's been 2 and a half weeks since then, only one cutting has survived, a small leaf has sprouted on it. Is it time for me to remove the plastic wrap and place it in an open pot?

I'm afraid to leave it inside the plastic cover because the tiny leaf is already very close to the plastic cover, will this inhibit growth?

I would say no. The reason is that the roots coming from the cutting are very small and fragile at this point and any disturbance might cause them to break this eliminating any viability attained. Leave it as is to give it a chance to develop a root ball sturdy enough to plant. What you should acquire while you wait is rooting hormone so the next time you would like to root a cutting you will have a better survival rate. You can trim the top part of the cover back thus exposing more of the leaf if you wish.

@Loosestrife2 Thanks for the response. Will the leaf stop growing if I don't remove the plastic wrap? I don't even want to shake it right now.

Don't remove the whole wrap. Trim down with a small sharp scissors just so the top edge of the wrap is just below the leaf. Glad to see that you cut the larger leaves in half. The little cutting would not have sustained both in their origional size.

Got it. Thanks. Ideally how long should the cutting be kept inside the cover? How do I determine that a sturdy root ball has emerged? The guy on the youtube video said that you have to wait until root pops out from the hole underneath the plastic potting jar he had.

I used a Chinese food container made of plastic and put holes in it myself, there isn't much difference between the pots right? I can wait until I see roots coming out of the hole right?

It will be a while, be patient. It's when the root ball has a fullness in the container that the roots start finding other places to go to that you see them coming out the drainage holes, then you can remove it from its starting container and repot it. In addition, when the container becomes full of roots you will see the cutting start producing leaves more quickly too.

Another trick which would tide you over for a few weeks until the cutting is more established would be to remove the plastic bag and put a couple of canes in the pot and replace the bag. If the canes are in a suitable position they will hold the bag away from the leaves for few more weeks and avoid new leaves from touching it. If you are worried about air circulation you could make a couple of small holes in the bag . Looks as though you are doing everything right!

Thanks everyone. I probably should have done the cane thing, its my first time growing from a cutting. Will do so from the next batch.
