If the flowers in spring were like ivory to pink tassels, then Cercidophyllum. If they were more like little, narrow, pink to purple, or white Sweet Peas, then more likely a Red Bud (Cercis)

My Cercidiphyllum has never flowered in 20 years, don't know if that's usual in the UK.
I think this is Cercis siliquastrum, Judas Tree, from the appearance of the pods.

My Cercidiphyllum doesn't flower either, but my Judas Tree (Cercis siliquastrum) certainly has masses of purple flowers in the Spring. So that's the clue, Jeremy.
