My 15yr old grafted plum tree has delicious fruit but have brown leather coloured markings on the skin but not inside what causes it and are they safe to eat

It looks like thrips damage, but that is only cosmetic.

yes they are safe to eat. I cant remember the cause of the 'scab' on the skin and it doesn't alter the taste of the plum.
