Hi, please can you help?
I have a conifer stood at my front door which was once green and now very brown. It's about a year old and worried it might be dying. Is there anything I can do to help it?

The conifer doesn't get much rain as it sits under the porch and is east facing. I've recently started to give it some food in the form of powder (miracle grow) but nothing has changed to date.

Any help and advice would be most grateful
Thanks

Tom

So sorry but that's dead.

Even though there's still some green on it?

It is dead. The next time you must supply the water the plant needs if there is to be another one in the same spot. This one was in a pot in an area sheltered from any kind of water.

Agree dead as the dodo... if you replace needs to be in a larger pot that is raised up off the ground using plant feet or similar. Watering is always going to be a challenge you might want to rethink what you put in that corner.

Thank you all for your comments. Very helpful indeed. I'm gutted it's dead. I'll have a good think about what to do next time.

Thanks again

I find these topiaries a challenge to keep alive unless they were planted in the ground. That pot is way too small though aesthetically pleasing, water, nutrients & sunlight are all insufficient. Also, it should not be up against a wall.

Well its not completely dead yet, but it might as well be - its some kind of conifer, and they don't regrow from dead branches, so the only bits that will grow is where its still green. You just need to be more attentive with your watering if you get a replacement.

I 'hate' to say this but, we have a neighbour who has an outside porch that gets little sun and no rain. After years of trying she now uses something artificial by the front door... If you don't want to do that, and I wouldn't, perhaps you need to rethink to something completely different!

Your conifer looks very similar to my laurel which is 2 metres tall and we have had for a great many years. It’s in a huge pot, and is regularly fed with comfrey liquid.

An afterthought -When you say you've been feeding it with miracle grow powder, this might be a silly question, but you did dissolve it in water before applying it? When you replace this poor thing also remember only to feed during the growing season (But its neither feeding nor nor starvation that's killed it but thirst as the others have said)

How do I say thanks?
