I need ideas for a basement garden with very little sun. Currently has olive trees that struggle. Would bay trees work? Any other shade loving shrubs\plants?

Ferns will be happy there as would sarcococca. Tiarella, heucherella and tellemia would also enjoy the shady conditions.

Some more to consider - Mahonia aquifolium, Bergenia, Lamium varieties and Liriope 'Munro White' tolerates quite deep shade and still flowers. Bay trees prefer to have some sunlight I'm afraid, but consider Box - they tolerate shade quite well and of course, you can get topiaried ones.

Also, Epimediums are excellent in shade - various leaf colours and pretty (but tiny) flowers.

Re ferns consider the "Japanese painted" ones to add a bit of variety to all the green.Euonymus fortunii has some lovely bright variegated varieties that stay attractive all winter and are happy in shade as long as they aren't under a heavy leaf canopy. Snowdrops and smaller daffodils are OK too, but snowdrops can be fussy - where happy they spread quickly but if they don't like a spot they won't grow at all. Buy them still in leaf after flowering ("in the green") rather than as bulbs. Hydrangeas are worth a try and the hardiest outdoor fuchsia Mrs Popple.
Oh, and Hellebores for early spring.

For something large then Fatsia Japonica, Viburnum Tinus or Skimmia. I don't think you will get very much in the way of good flowering plants but Heucheras will give you lots of coloured foliage. The only drawback might be that vine weevil can be a problem.
