"River Birch" - does anyone have a Betula nigra 'Heritage' Tree, and do you recommend it? Thanks.

Hi, unless you have a very large garden, I wouldn't recommend it, it can grow up to 60ft high, with a spread of 40ft, Derek.

Many thanks Derek - I did wonder! I'll go for something more to scale :)

If you want something smaller then have a look at Betula utilis jacquemontii (Himalayan Birch) as a multi stem tree. You might want to keep it a little smaller still by occasional pruning.

Thanks Jimmy - I’d love one but think it might be too dominant in a 50 x 40 foot garden?

If you're looking for a stunning tree which will be at its best in a couple of week's time, why not have a look at Amelanchier canadensis? It will have plenty of interest right up until leaf fall. Lots of other varieties and you can also have it as a large shrub.

Jimmy - you know my taste! I have already ordered an Amelanchier (we had one in our last garden), and a shrub-size one too, which I've brought with me. But thanks very much for suggesting it :)

How do I say thanks?
