As most will tell you here Prim, it is poisonous, look up wikipedia.Yours could also qualify to go on Dr. Who ! :o)

It's poisonous if injested, and contact with skin can cause a rash for those with delicate skin or a skin condition.
Leave it unless you have small children about.

It might be Datura ferox:

though I have no idea if that is found in the UK.

Thanks for all your help, yes it is the Datura ferox without a doubt.
Many thanks Prim

I'd be happy to do a seed swap if you're interested!!

I would be happy to send you one of these seed pods (well packaged) I will leave them on to ripen as long as possible and let you know how it goes
a bit later on.

I would feel uncomfortable if it weren't on a swap basis!

Okay thanks that's nice of you, my garden is on a hillside very free draining and rocky, beautiful in spring but finished by August unless it likes hot & dry, but I will have ago at most things.

Welcome aboard Prim.
That is definitely a Datura.
Datura flowers point up. Brugmansia on the other hand hang down.
That is the most macabre seed pod that I've seen on a Datura though!!
