My agapanthus flowers have never grown straight up. Have I planted the root clump I purchased uneven in the pot? This is the second year of flowering & I've had 19 beautiful large flowers but they are all over the place.(seven of the flower stems snapped with being wonky so I’ve cut them for indoors) Should I repot or put a support around the pot to encourage straight growth?

Mine are the same with 5ft stems. Because the pot is so crammed it's difficult to put anything in to hold them up but I shall split the plant at the end of the season and see if that helps.

I have one that leans, also. I think it is too cramped in the pot and needs to be divided. It dries out very quickly, so it will be divided and I have friends who will be happy to get the excess pieces.

Agree-I was going to suggest a bigger pot too.

Me too - needs a bigger pot - if you're keeping them in a small pot in the belief they need cramped roots to flower, they don't, its a myth. You can divide and repot in two sections, or just put the whole thing in a larger pot.

Thank you so much for the advice. I thought they liked to be cramped in a pot & as my plant has always been wonky thought it was something else. I’ll split & hopefully that’ll sort it.

I've never seen this before, but I've never seen agapanthus in a pot before. The pot is definitely too small and the roots cannot expand enough to adequately support the top growth nor can it take in enough water. Here are some options: plant it in the ground if you can. This would be the best situation. Divide or quarter this plant. By all means it needs a bigger pot with fresh new potting mix. Your plant is starving & thirsting.

But it's flowering so beautifully! I've never managed to grow agapanthus successfully, so I'm green with envy.

My Agapanthus is in the ground & that leans over too, must be the weight of the flower head :o))

My neighbour planted several Agapanthus in her border,
their stems are all straight. Maybe they need deep planting?

Thanks for the advice. I live in the North East of England which is pretty cold much of the year so I don’t think the plant would survive a winter in the ground.
Unfortunately I can’t take all the credit for this agapanthus pb123 I bought it as a root clump. Although I have looked after it, & feed & water regularly. My only regret is not splitting it in two when I bought it. I’ve read up on splitting agapanthus and it says only split every four years so I’ve got another two years to go. I’ll move it to a bigger pot at the end of flowering.

I've split my Agapanthus every two years with no problems - I have to keep it in a certain size pot to fit inside another pot, so its necessary I do so. It still flowers away merrily... fewer the first year, more in the second, so I had 7 flowers last year, and 9 this year... On the other hand, you will get more flowers if you do wait the four years...

I have set up a 3ft high pot to plant some gifted Hollyhocks when they arrive. Broken pots at the base for drainage, then some Gerbil compost for the roots, and the rest more soil for weight and stability.

How do I say thanks?
