I am considering buying some nerine bowdenii bulbs to plant in containers this month. Never grown them before any advice on planting caring for etc., would be appreciated. Thanks.

I Phloxie, they need to be planted with the tip of the bulb [nose] just above the compost. to flower well they need to be in a sunny position that drains well. the flowers appear late October and the leaves in the spring. mine are just growing their leaves now.
not sure if they will be happy with other plants growing with them.
I have mine in the ground at the base of a wall.

Thanks Sbg. I have heard that they take a few years before they flower would you know if that is true?

if they have been treated correctly they should flower this autumn. but then may not flower in subsequent years.

I have mine in a large pot - they've been in it for years and flower every autumn without fail. They did flower in their first season too. The pot is in a sheltered south west facing corner of the house wall.
You normally get leaves in spring and summer, and flowers after the leaves have gone.

In my experience, only the premium priced bulbs are actually large enough to bloom. The same is true of many other fall blooming bulbs, some species tulips, and a few other less common bulbs. By premium price, I mean $5 to $10 per inch of diameter.

stera do you have other plants in with your Nerines or just Nerines? I always cram lots into my pots and didn't think extra plants that need lots of water would be beneficial for the Nerines.

Thanks fellow gardening friends for your replies. I have ordered 10 nerine bulbs today. I went for the ones advertised as large flowering bulbs, hopefully they will do just that in the Autumn. :)

No Seaburn, the nerines are on their own and get almost totally neglected through the summer. They might get the odd splash now and then but normally depend on the rain.

How do I say thanks?
