Carex elata Aurea (Bowles golden sedge); semi-evergreen grasses "can be combed at this time of year to get rid of the dead leaves": just been doing that and it's exhausting. Beth Chatto's people cut theirs into a ball shape . . . has anyone tried that method of pruning? Thanks!

Thanks Arbuthnot - I have cut back the other two and just hope for plenty of new growth!

It was in an RHS magazine article I had given to me I did a blog on it a while ago :-)

Thanks Daylily. I have just found your blog on it . . . amazing and hard to believe it worked! As my S. Gigantea took three years to look good, I think I'll leave it for one more year before taking such drastic action :)

I agree the job is exhausting. I either leave mine alone so that the new colour hides the dead or chop them. Life's too short to comb garden grasses!
