Hi All!
With an overly hot June and July last, two of my hostas sadly passed away and need replacing.
Can anyone suggest a perennial variety that slugs are not overly fond of? The hostas live in containers.

I love Hostas Joan and fight a battle against the slugs and snails every year. The ones they visit least seem to be those with the biggest, strongest and darkest leaves. In my case that's Millennium, Empress Wu and Blue Hawaii.

Thanks, Ginellie

I did of course mean 'evergreen' rather than 'perennial' - just a slip!

Not a hosta grower (snails...) but did you try copper tape round the containers?

I don't have an issue with slugs but from what I understand, they don't like the blue hostas with the heavy waffle type leaves.

'While there's no such thing as a slug-proof hosta, some varieties are resilient, particularly those with blue or thick, puckered leaves.'

Refer to the above link for a list of hosta varieties that are resilient to slugs. You'll still have to but down some repellent like 'Sluggo.'

If you just want to ditch the hosta idea altogether, look at the Encore Azaleas. Of course I have both. You'll have to pick one that will grow in your area but they bloom 3x/year, evergreen and come in all sizes and colors. Here is the link for Encore Azaleas.

Hi, 3 that probably wont be attacked by slugs are ;H Sum and Substance, H Snowdon, H Seiboldiana, these are thicker leaved species, which are harder for the slugs to get into, Derek.

I spray mine with a diluted garlic mix and cover the top of the pot with fir cones which hopefully makes sliding across very uncomfortable for snails and slugs. Some always get through though.

Copper tape is wonderful stuff for pot plants. Even the Poundland tape although I use two together because it's only about a half inch wide.

There are no evergreen hostas, all die back for winter and re-emerge in Spring.

Thanks all of you. Yes, I do know about the copper tape but I think it looks a bit unsightly on a nice container. I have tried the stuff that you just sprinkle around but the odd one still gets through!
I will take a look at all your suggestions.

You can buy copper sheet which you could stand the pot on, but you would have to sort out the drainage aspect.

Thanks Honeysuckle. I didn't know about copper sheeting. However, think I will try some of the hostas suggested for the time being.

I'll certainly give it a try!
