I have a peony in a pot, coming up looking healthy with lots of buds on, watched gardeners world last night and it said about dividing peonies, when would be the best time to do this ? Autumn or Spring?

yes autumn as Andrew suggests. plant them to the same depth that they were growing at.

I would advise doing it in autmn, immediately after the top growth has died off
