What the heck is it? I sometimes buy the odd tree to plant on our field and this was one that was greatly reduced at one of the local garden centres. Not in leaf at the time, marked up as Alnus, which should make it an Alder. However, now it is in leaf, with the wonderful backdrop of the derelict greenhouse, it looks nothing like an Alder. Could it be one of the Maples? Doesn't really matter as it will be planted anyway, but it would be nice to know!

Hmm..Don't think its an Acer. The foliage looks downy. Hmmm....could it be Platanus orientalis?

I've been looking for ages trying to find it online Honeysuckle. If I were you I think I'd go back to the seller and try to find out what it is because it could be a massive tree. It looks like it has 7 lobes from your photo, but the leaves also look a bit 'downy'. It could be some kind of Acer, but the habit looks a bit loose and soft. Sorry...I'm stumped! Hope someone else recognises it. :) Maybe Acer Siebolidianum?

Definitely not an Acer: the old leaf scars indicate that the leaves are alternate, rather than opposite. At the moment, I'm leaning toward a Platanus.

Thank you for all your suggestions, never thought about a Plane tree, but not sure there is enough lobes on a London Plane.
Thank you Karen for spending so much time trying to find it. I like the idea of the Acer Siebolidianum, I'd love it to be that!
I don't mind if it grows into a massive tree, there is plenty of room for it, but it would then depend on just where I put it. Mind you it's never going to grow too big in my lifetime and after that who knows what will happen to the land?
As for taking it back, it won't fit in my car, OH bought it when he was out fishing and brought it home in his van. I had admired it the previous day, together with a Cercidiphyllum, the Katsura tree, which he also bought!
Might take one of the leaves to see what they say.

Platanus [plane tree species] that's what I thought but as to which one. The London plane grows into a large tree. There are some wonderful ones on the main roads into Nottingham. and Hull [that's where I have seen them in all their glory but a good tree for polluted areas]
but there are other species.

Update on the tree for those who are still pondering! I called into the GC with a piece and they said that it was reduced as though they knew it was an Alnus, didn't know which one.
Now it's in leaf I was told it is an alnus glutinosa laciniata, or cut-leaved Alder, so at least I know.
