Trying to have a perfumed patio. The viburnum is finishing and a daphne is still too small for the perfume to carry. Is there anything that will flower for most of the summer? I've got some pinks but they only last for a limited time. Have also got honeysuckle which flowers late summer. Also a couple of roses in pots but the scent doesn't carry. I'm looking for something highly scented.

I know you mentioned pinks but Dianthus 'Pink Kisses' will give an excellent perfume all Summer long if you dead head regularly. Although they are not as hardy as the conventional pinks they will survive if you can protect them from the worst of the Winter. Like most pinks they do come easily from cuttings (pips).

Moonflowers for night scented flowers. Related to morning glories, giant white flowers smell like gardenias.

There is a small flower (about the size of Virginia stock flowers) used for baskets , comes in white and light blue, which smells strongly of vanilla - perfumes the whole polytunnel at the nursery. Flowered for me all summer and has survived the winter in the container, ready to take off again and it gently self seeds too. What a shame I can't remember its name...will come back if I remember.

Night Phlox or Zaluzianskya capensis or Z. ovata is strongly scented and easily starts from seed.

I have a daphne 'eternal fragrance' which has flowered continuously since I planted it 18 months ago ( even through our mildish winter). It's placed beside a path and I can see people stop to identify where the perfume is coming from.

I remembered! Nemesia vanilla lady is what I was struggling for. Omitted that sometimes the flowers are a delicate pink too. Summer bedding in this country but some survive in a mild winter.

wylie I can never remember its full name. the girls called it the zazu plant as they recognised the za bit and just thought of zazu from the lion king. But that are the ones I was thinking off.

Loads of ideas here to ponder on. Thankyou everyone for helping me out. Bound to hit on a few for my patio pots. I'm so pleased to have such a wealth of experience to draw on; you're amazing.

Don't forget Nicotiana Sylvestris, a biennial easily grown from seed, with a wonderful scent in the evening and the white flowers are stunning in the fading light.

Seaburngirl: I have a friend whose sister loves it, and he is always asking me to get him some seeds when I order from someone who sells it. (Most people around here don't have a credit card or are aware of PayPal)
