Plant pot sterilising.
See question about root aphids.
Time to re-pot the Auriculas, but I need really clean pots.
Was thinking bleach, but at what strength?
any suggestions?

I still use jeyes fluid at the strengths/dilutions mentioned on the tin.

Not used bleach before but the concentration mentioned for work surfaces should be ok.

9 to 1 is the recommended strength. 9 litres of water to 1 of bleach does not make a very deep bin full. Done about a third of the ones I have before it rained.
Really dislike the smell of Jeye's fluid and not keen on using it as it is poisonous to cats.

didn't know Jeyes was poisonous to cats. I don't mind the smell but my girls hate it. but I like creosote too.

we had torrential rain overnight and to about 10 this morning, but it has been dry and breezy all pm.

No not bleach - Go with food grade hydrogen peroxide. You can pick up a bottle at the grocery store. You don't need to use it full strength. Fill up a bucket with water, add a cup of HP. Let your pots soak in it for 20 minutes or so. They'll be clean. HP converts to water. I use it to brush my teeth.

You may buy able to buy Hydrogen peroxide in grocery stores in the USA, but it is not readily available in the UK.
Our friendly Nursery man always used bleach and I would have asked him about the dilution rate, but he is away plant hunting in Turkey at the moment.

I hate the smell of Jeyes too - smells like newly cleaned public toilets-but I made myself put up with it for cleaning the greenhouse. Can you do the job outside where the smell gets diluted by the fresh air? (though chance would be a fine thing this weather...) The smell of bleach isn't good for us either. Some people recommend using a 3:1
solution of (presumably cheap)vinegar (But I think that smells even worse than Jeyes...) These days I chicken out and use household detergent.

true very hot soapy detergent will do the job.

I would think hot water and a scrub brush should do the trick.

Tried that before and it did not kill all the root aphid eggs. The water would need to be hotter than my hands could stand.

OK hot water with a few drops of dish detergent.

How do I say thanks?
