It looks like a chaenomeles to me Rose. Those definitely look like pink flower buds.

Thank you Hywel, but as we are now in our second year here, nothing happened with it at all. It just produced the berries , but no flowers appeared. So this year I pruned and shaped it a bit as it looked such an untidy shrub. I had Chaenomeles at the last garden and it was a climber and trailed right across the garage.
Thank you Scotsgran. As I just said to Hywel, I thought Chaenomeles was a climber like the one I had at the last home! Maybe because I have pruned it a bit, it will flower this year!

It must have had flowers but maybe you missed them. Berries develop from the ovule which is part of the flower so there must have been flowers at one point.

Chaenomeles is not really a climber as it has to be pruned carefully to allow it to be self supporting or tied in to a support. I have several different ones. I have one named C. 'Lemon and Lime' it has been neglected and is just like the photos above, a straggly looking bush. I usually prune them after the Spring flowers go over. If you have just pruned it you might have cut off this years flowers.

as previously said there has to be flowers for there to be berries. how big are these and what do the leaves look like.

Thankyou Scotsgran. I went online to look at the different species and the C.Japonica can be easily trained as a climber. I think these are the ones I had ! Last year when I was looking at the new front garden, this shrub looked really neglected and I almost dug it up, so I am pleased now that I left it ! I will probably have to wait a while for it to improve.

I don't think there were any berries at all last year when we came here Hywel, so am looking forward to the flowers now!

The fruits are like small apples. They make great jelly.

I don't know what shrub it is Rose but actually those look like flower buds to me. It can't produce berries without having flowers first anyway, that is biologically impossible.
