Sorry, Arbuthnot, but these leaves are opposite and pinnate, with acute apices. False Acacia's leaves are alternate, bipinnate, and have rounded apices. It's hard to tell the scale, but I suspect an ash, and probably suckers, rather than a seedling, judging by the vigor of the shoots.

I agree with Tug. I get lots of these seeded by birds, forever pulling them out.

They are ash and they are blown by the wind so we cant blame the birds this time. the cluster of ash seeds is called a bunch of keys. the seed has a small 'wing' around each key so they float/twist in the air as they leave the bunch. I am for ever removing them.

Interesting. We get multitudes of Ash seedlings but I have never seen one with red stems.

So it definitely is an ash then?

Sorry it's not False Acacia, Youngalistair. You'd be better off with that. Definitely dig up the ash though as I know from experience how many thousands of seedlings take root.

Yes thanks for that i was in two minds about whether to leave it or not as it would serve as a good screening tree as it's fast growing. But as you say it's the seedlings that i would hate.

Looks like False Acacia to me. A pretty tree but thorny.
