My son has rose like bush in his garden that has borne apple like fruit and sent photo as attached. Wonder if it is some type of Japonica quince?

yes it is Chaenomeles speciosa or Japanese quince. As Yorkslass says there was a similar question a few days back.

That's exactly what it is. If you scroll back through recent questions you'll find confirmation. They make excellent jelly, or try adding just one to an apple pie for a bit of extra bite. Don't try biting into one like an apple though as they are very strongly flavoured....
