Good morning, I usually cover seeds with a fine layer of compost, but Carol Klein recommends grit - do any of you have a strong opinion about this? Tia

I use vermiculite because it retains moisture without becoming soggy. Vermiculite under seeds like petunias works very well.

i use what ever I have to hand, now that I have run out of vermiculite I just use sieved compost.
grit looks nice but it is too expensive.
