I suspect it is just that you are out more especially when the females are getting ready to lay eggs. it has been damp and humid just lately and that is ideal for the little beggars.
Its onlt the females that suck blood, protein meal to get ready for egg production.

Check around for standing water and get rid of it. They can lay eggs in a bottle cap of water - those little buggers. If you have a bird bath, do a daily water change. Mosquitoes are particularly drawn to those with type O blood and they can smell it on your breath. They are most active in the evening. Citronella plants are a natural mosquito repellent.

Thanks sbg i have certainly been out more than usual as i have more time to potter about than i did previously, and the humidity sounds about right. The mossies' are definitely getting a big protein fix from me lol.
Paul the standing water angle is making me think the drip trays beneath the tomatoes by the house are a big attraction and i have drained them out and will keep dry if i can after watering.
I've never heard of the type o blood attraction, interesting because i'm type o, those devious little bxxxxrs are very streetwise.
Oh well if nothing gets better i'm going to impersonate a Tuareg tribesman and cover up........apologies in advance to any gardening Tuaregs.
Thanks all appreciate your thoughts.

I'm unconvinced by the blood type theory, I'm certain there are other factors in play in respect of how attractive you are to mosquitoes or gnats. Both my sons are B group; one of them rarely gets bitten, but the other appears to be the most attractive thing on the planet to biting insects, so bad he once got sent home from school because they thought he'd got some infectious disease - covered in bites and all were huge and swollen. Their father was blood group 0 and rarely suffered bites, so there has to be some other physiological explanation. Definitely standing water is a problem - check there aren't any containers lurking somewhere in the garden you've forgotten about that might be full of water...

They have a preference for type O blood.

There are other factors involved too. If the person drinks, smokes or has some kind of illness, the mosquitoes tend to avoid those.

Well I guess I'll just carry on drinking and smoking! Yet when I'm in a hot country I get well-attacked like you Jake and also look like someone from a horror film.

This was interesting so I searched o more and found the following that might be of interest:

I'm type O and have never much suffered mossy bites though. Perhaps it happens more in hotter countries?

Bare in mind there are over 3000 species of mosquitoes.

Interesting link, thanks Yorkslass... I don't know what my brother in law's blood group is, but he's got some superpower when it comes to insects that I wish I had. If he walks into a cloud of midges or mossies, they disperse rapidly - he;s only ever been stung once by a wasp that he knows of, and only noticed it because he saw the wasp and noticed a very small bump after it left him, no pain, nothing. He also barely reacts to medications, they seem not to touch him, so he always ends up on the highest dose of something, though even that might not work...

How do I say thanks?
